Sky Announces 'Gomorrah – Origins' Prequel, Delving into Naples in 1977

Television giant Sky has officially announced the imminent release of a highly anticipated prequel to the critically acclaimed Italian crime saga, "Gomorrah." The new six-part drama, titled "Gomorrah – Origins," is slated to debut in early 2026, airing on Sky channels and becoming available on the NOW streaming service across the United Kingdom. This ambitious project promises an exhaustive, detailed examination of the nascent stages of the Camorra's power structure and its early operations. Significantly, principal photography has already wrapped entirely in Naples, confirming the production’s readiness for its scheduled launch.

The narrative transports viewers back to Naples in 1977, a pivotal year marked by profound social and economic upheaval for the metropolitan area. The core focus of the story is the formative years of Pietro Savastano, who grows up to become a pivotal, fearsome figure in the original series. The prequel meticulously charts his initial ascent within the criminal hierarchy of the notorious Secondigliano district, revealing the crucial formative events and early connections that ultimately molded him into the ruthless, calculating boss he would eventually become. The young Pietro is depicted emerging from the city’s impoverished neighborhoods, initially forced to survive through acts of petty crime and the theft of mopeds, yet even then, he harbored deep, unyielding ambitions for authority and widespread respect.

The directorial responsibilities for the series were strategically divided between two key talents. Marco D’Amore, instantly recognizable to fans for his powerful portrayal of Ciro Di Marzio in the flagship series, directed the initial four episodes. Francesco Giaccio then took the helm for the concluding two installments, bringing the six-part story to its climax. D’Amore also played a crucial dual role as a co-writer and the artistic director, ensuring the production accurately and authentically captured the gritty atmosphere surrounding the genesis of this powerful organized crime syndicate. The creative team underscores that, in contrast to the high-level drug trafficking seen in the later years of "Gomorrah," this prequel will specifically concentrate on the illegal trade of cigarette smuggling, which accurately reflects the distinct and earlier operational phase of Neapolitan criminality during the 1970s.

The ensemble cast introduces several fresh faces intended to inject new vitality and perspective into this established universe. Luca Lubrano steps into the challenging role of the young Pietro Savastano. Other significant characters include Angelo “A Sirena,” who serves as the neighborhood's established boss and into whose criminal orbit the young Savastano enters. We also meet the future Scianel, played in her youth by Annalisa Magliocca, who is introduced as a struggling young mother dealing with the pressures imposed by her husband. Beyond the expected violence inherent in the Camorra’s rise, the storytelling promises a deep dive into Pietro’s personal tragedy—his internal conflicts and the agonizing choice he must make between his first love, Imma, who desperately dreams of escaping Naples, and the relentless, seductive pull of the streets. Ultimately, "Gomorrah – Origins" is a poignant history detailing the devastating loss of youthful innocence and the transformation of raw, street-level ambition into the brutal, unsparing reality of organized crime.
