The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival is set to take place from August 15 to 22, 2025, showcasing a diverse array of films from around the world. The festival will open with the Bosnian dark comedy "The Pavilion," directed by Dino Mustafić, which delves into the lives of elderly residents in a nursing home who, after enduring years of mistreatment, take matters into their own hands, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement.
Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa will serve as the jury president for the Competition Programme – Feature Film. A total of 50 films will compete for the Heart of Sarajevo awards across four categories: feature, documentary, short, and student films. The selection includes 15 world premieres, six international, 28 regional, and two national premieres.
Italian director Paolo Sorrentino will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award, recognizing his significant contributions to the art of cinema. A retrospective of his films will be featured as part of the festival’s "Tribute To" program.
In partnership with the Polish Film Institute, the festival will present "Spotlight on Poland," highlighting the strength of Poland’s co-production potential and the innovative frameworks, tools, and production companies in the country.
Additionally, the Sarajevo Film Festival, in collaboration with the Council of Europe, has introduced the Special Youth Perspectives Award. This annual distinction aims to highlight films that critically engage with young people’s lived experiences, aspirations, and socio-political agency in contemporary society. The award carries a monetary value of €7,500 and will be presented for the first time during the 31st edition of the festival.
