Iron Maiden Celebrates 50 Years with 'Burning Ambition' Documentary and Global Tour Extension

To commemorate five decades of heavy metal dominance, the legendary British band Iron Maiden is set to release a feature-length documentary titled "Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition." Directed by the acclaimed Malcolm Venville and produced by Dominic Freeman, the film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical debut on May 7, 2026. This cinematic milestone is strategically timed to coincide with the peak of their massive "The Run For Your Lives World Tour," a global trek that is slated to continue through the end of 2026.

Officially titled by Universal Pictures International, the documentary promises an unprecedented deep dive into the band's extensive archives, tracing their trajectory from their humble beginnings in East London back in 1975. Beyond historical footage, the film will feature substantial behind-the-scenes content captured during their current world tour. Venville, who previously earned recognition for his work on "Churchill at War," has focused his lens on capturing the essence of the group’s fifty-year evolution and their enduring impact on the music industry.

The narrative of the film is enriched by reflections from the band members themselves, alongside testimonials from high-profile admirers. Notable figures such as Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, Metallica's Lars Ulrich, and Public Enemy's Chuck D provide insight into the band's cultural and musical legacy. Crucially, the documentary features the final interview with original vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who passed away on October 21, 2024. The film also addresses the various trials the band faced, including the challenging period during the 1990s that former frontman Blaze Bayley famously described as a "war on grunge."

With a discography boasting 17 studio albums—culminating in their most recent 2021 release, "Senjutsu"—and over 100 million records sold globally, Iron Maiden has maintained a fiercely independent and uncompromising creative vision. Band manager Rod Smallwood emphasized the authenticity of the project, confirming that Venville’s production team was granted "unrestricted access" to the band and their inner circle. This level of transparency ensures that the documentary will serve as the definitive account of one of rock's most resilient institutions.

The "Run For Your Lives" tour, a central pillar of their 50th-anniversary festivities, will see the band perform over 50 shows across the globe in 2026. The European leg is set to kick off on May 23, 2026, at the OAKA Stadium in Athens, Greece, featuring a setlist exclusively curated from their first nine studio albums. While the tour originally commenced on May 27, 2025, in Budapest, Hungary, it is scheduled to reach its grand finale on November 25, 2026, in Yokohama, Japan. Following this intensive touring cycle, the band has announced plans to take a well-deserved sabbatical from live performances throughout the entirety of 2027.
