The International Documentary Film Festival, Astra Film Chișinău 2025, is set to return to Moldova, offering audiences a compelling opportunity to engage with contemporary global cinema. This highly anticipated event, orchestrated by the Astra Film/CNM Astra structures with crucial backing from the Government of Romania, is scheduled to run for three days, from November 13 through November 15. All screenings and associated activities will take place at the Loteanu Cinema, a venue previously known to locals as Patria - Centru.
The formal opening ceremony is slated for November 13. The evening’s program features the screening of a film directed by Diana Nicolae, immediately followed by a robust discussion centered on the pressing topic: “The Age of Digital Feudalism.” This concept highlights the significant concentration of power held by major corporations within the digital sphere, a dynamic that often places users in a position of dependency. These critical reflections are intended to provoke thoughtful consideration of current global realities and the evolving structures of authority in the modern era.
Running concurrently throughout the three-day festival, concluding on November 15, is the dedicated educational track known as “Astra Film Junior.” This specialized program showcases sixteen documentary films meticulously selected for children and teenagers. In a move designed to maximize cultural exchange, the entire festival remains completely accessible, with all sessions and events provided free of charge. However, due to the expected high level of public interest, potential attendees are strongly advised to reserve their seats well in advance to guarantee entry.
The Chișinău event marks the fourth iteration of the Astra Film Festival held in the city, continuing a long-standing tradition that celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year in Romania. Dumitru Budrala, the founder of the Astra Film Festival, specifically highlighted the unique warmth and enthusiasm demonstrated during past encounters with the Chișinău audience, emphasizing the special connection the festival shares with the local community.
This gathering is instrumental in fostering cultural dialogue between the nations. The festival’s realization is made possible through funding provided by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova (DRRM), operating under the auspices of the Government of Romania. The comprehensive program features several highly acclaimed, award-winning documentaries, ensuring a high-caliber cinematic experience. Notable selections include “Kabul, Between Prayers,” directed by Abuzar Amini (Netherlands, 2025), and “My Dear Theo,” directed by Alisa Kovalenko (Ukraine, 2025). This curated showcase promises attendees not only high-quality non-fiction cinema but also opportunities for engaging in timely and relevant debates.
