Strategic Alliance to Boost Production of Plant-Based Polymer for Fashion Industry

Edited by: Екатерина С.

A significant strategic alliance has been formed between Avantium N.V., Tereos, and LVMH GAÏA to accelerate the industrial-scale production of Releaf, a 100% plant-based and recyclable polymer. This collaboration aims to drive the transition away from fossil-based plastics towards more environmentally friendly alternatives, with a particular focus on applications within the fashion and cosmetics packaging sectors.

Releaf, scientifically known as polyethylene furanoate (PEF), is derived from renewable feedstocks and offers a versatile solution for packaging and other applications. The partnership leverages Avantium's advanced polymer expertise, Tereos' extensive agricultural capabilities in providing plant-based feedstocks, and LVMH GAÏA's commitment to sustainability-driven demand. This synergy is crucial for advancing bio-based plastics and reducing the fashion industry's substantial environmental footprint.

The collaboration builds upon existing partnerships within the EU-supported PEFerence consortium, which aims to accelerate the shift from fossil-based to plant-based polyesters. This initiative also supports LVMH's LIFE 360 environmental program, which includes the ambition to phase out fossil-based plastics from packaging. The fashion industry, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, water usage, and textile waste, is increasingly seeking sustainable materials to mitigate its environmental impact.

At the core of this initiative is Avantium's proprietary YXY Technology, which efficiently converts plant-based sugars into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) and subsequent polymers like Releaf. The companies plan to establish a European consortium to construct and operate the first industrial-scale facility utilizing this technology, marking a concrete step towards the commercialization and widespread accessibility of Releaf. The global bioplastics market is projected for substantial growth, with Europe currently dominating market share, indicating a strong regional commitment to sustainable materials.
