World Goth Day, observed annually on May 22nd, is a global celebration of the Goth subculture. Originating in the UK in 2009, the day provides an opportunity for Goths worldwide to celebrate their identity and make their presence known.
The inaugural celebration was inspired by BBC Radio 6's focus on various music subcultures, including Goth music. DJ 'Cruel Britannia' (aka 'BatBoy Slim') and DJ 'martin oldgoth' spearheaded the event, which quickly gained international traction.
World Goth Day events in 2025 include a virtual festival from May 22nd to 24th, featuring diverse Goth underground music. Additionally, the USS Hornet in Alameda, CA, hosted the World Goth Day Festival on May 3rd and 4th, showcasing Goth art, fashion, and music. These events highlight the subculture's emphasis on individuality, creative expression, and appreciation for the unconventional.
