John Galliano and Zara Announce Landmark Two-Year Creative Partnership

The fashion industry is buzzing with the news of a significant two-year creative alliance between the renowned British designer John Galliano and the Spanish retail giant Zara. This collaboration is scheduled to debut its first collection in September 2026, featuring Galliano’s unique reinterpretation of archival pieces from Zara’s history. Since taking the helm as Chair in April 2022, Marta Ortega Pérez—daughter of Inditex founder Amancio Ortega—has consistently recruited elite talent from the world of haute couture, including past collaborations with Stefano Pilati and photographer Steven Meisel. Galliano has expressed genuine enthusiasm for this foray into the mass-market sector, highlighting the creative sustainability of the project and describing the opportunity as "super interesting." This move follows the highly acclaimed conclusion of his decade-long tenure at Maison Margiela, which culminated in his celebrated 2024 Artisanal show.

The partnership with Galliano is noteworthy not just for its scale, but for the specific artistic values he brings to the table; while many global brands prioritize speed and production volume, Galliano is celebrated for his imagination, narrative power, and emotional resonance. His signature technique of transforming fashion into a compelling story—a skill honed during his legendary years at Dior and Maison Margiela—will now be applied to the Zara archives. The designer will have unprecedented access to a vast collection of discontinued styles, utilizing his expertise to reinvent them as "new seasonal expressions and creations." Galliano, who famously exited Dior in 2011 following a public incident, found a successful "second beginning" at Maison Margiela starting in 2014, where he spent ten transformative years. Now, by working with Zara’s archives, the designer aims to create garments that are "beyond gender and beyond seasons," promising to infuse everyday apparel with a distinct sense of individuality. This two-year collaboration will be unveiled through seasonal collections that mirror the traditional rhythms of high-fashion runway cycles.
