China: fashion meets cultural heritage

Edited by: Екатерина С.

In the Guizhou province of southwest China, traditional Miao embroidery, the songs of the Buyi people, and wax dyeing techniques are being revitalized. These intangible cultural heritages, once isolated, are now reaching a global audience through the creativity of young people and digital tools.

Designer Yang Chunlin, a 36-year-old Miao designer, is transforming his cultural roots into global fashion trends. He founded his brand, "GU A XIN," in 2013, commemorating his mother and grandmother's Miao embroidery skills. He combines traditional Miao symbols with modern streetwear designs, launching embroidered T-shirts with a "Sun Wukong" theme, which sold over 10,000 pieces.

In July 2024, Yang Chunlin launched a fashion show in Kaili City, Guizhou, showcasing traditional crafts such as Miao silver ornaments, hand-dyeing, and embroidery. The brand "GU A XIN" won the "2024 Fashion Brand Award," and Yang Chunlin was awarded the "30th China Top Ten Fashion Designers Award," further solidifying the brand's influence in promoting Chinese original brands and intangible cultural heritage fashion.
