China's fashion market: trends, consumer behavior and e-commerce

18:36, 07 May

Edited by: Екатерина С.

China's fashion market presents a diverse landscape influenced by geography, climate, and cultural values. Retail sales experienced a 3.5% growth in 2024, reaching 48.8 trillion yuan. This growth underscores the importance of understanding regional trends and the impact of e-commerce for brands aiming to succeed in this market.

Climate variations across China significantly affect consumer preferences. In northern cities, warmth and durability are prioritized, while central regions favor versatile layering options. Southern areas emphasize lightweight, breathable fabrics, and tropical regions drive demand for resort wear. Brands like Uniqlo and Bosideng have adapted to these regional needs with specialized product lines.

Seasonal shopping patterns are prominent, with peaks during Chinese New Year and events like Singles' Day (11.11). Young consumers drive fast-fashion trends, while middle-class professionals invest in quality workwear. Luxury consumers focus on exclusivity and status, favoring premium designer labels. E-commerce platforms and live-streaming events significantly influence purchasing decisions.

The rise of local brands, fueled by the "Guochao" movement, blends traditional Chinese heritage with modern fashion. However, international luxury brands maintain a strong presence, particularly through localized marketing strategies. Sustainability is also gaining traction, with younger consumers seeking eco-friendly materials and ethical production practices. The second-hand luxury market is expanding, driven by conscious consumption.

China's e-commerce landscape is shaped by platforms like Tmall, JD.com, and social commerce channels such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu. Livestreaming, hosted by influencers, significantly impacts consumer engagement and sales. Brands must adapt their strategies to leverage the strengths of each platform to succeed in this competitive market.
