Kamila Akimbekova's Darmarka: Championing Sustainable Fashion in Kazakhstan

07:41, 14 April

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Eco-Consciousness in Kazakhstan's Fashion Scene

Kamila Akimbekova, a Kazakh eco-blogger and activist, is a strong advocate for developing environmentally friendly habits from a young age. She raises awareness about the significant pollution caused by clothing production, including waste, toxic dyes, and excessive energy consumption. Akimbekova emphasizes the importance of addressing overconsumption and promoting mindful, sustainable lifestyles in Kazakhstan.

Darmarka: A Sustainable Initiative for Reuse and Exchange

In 2017, Akimbekova launched Darmarka in Almaty as a platform for the free donation and exchange of used items. This initiative challenges overconsumption and encourages conscious living within the community. Unsold items are then donated to charitable foundations and distributed to rural areas.

Darmarka has expanded its scope to include recycling various materials like paper, plastic, glass, and electronics. Akimbekova advocates for government support of eco-initiatives, including subsidies for textile recycling plants. She believes that the Kazakh public is increasingly receptive to adopting eco-friendly practices and fostering a culture of sustainability.

Akimbekova calls for increased public support, environmental education, improved infrastructure, and greater collaboration from businesses to promote sustainability. She also highlights the importance of consulting with experts before launching eco-campaigns. Darmarka promotes a shift towards understanding and addressing environmental issues within the fashion industry and beyond, inspiring a more sustainable and conscious approach to consumption.
