News report from Hakka News: preparation and first impressions of the exhibition 'The Little Traveler, a Big Journey' at Таоюаньском детском художественном музее

On March 21, 2026, the Taoyuan Children’s Art Center (TCAM), an integral part of the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, will launch its highly anticipated annual exhibition titled "Tiny Traveler, Big Adventure" (小旅人.大旅程). Scheduled to run until June 14, 2026, this flagship project positions the concept of "travel" as a vital instrument for artistic education and personal growth, inviting young explorers to engage with the world through a creative lens.

Each year, the museum selects a central theme to guide its curatorial vision, developing bespoke installations that address the evolving needs of childhood development. For the 2026 season, the focus shifts to the transformative power of the journey itself. This process is designed to awaken the senses, stir deep emotions, and ignite the imagination, ultimately helping children navigate their place within the vast global landscape.

The exhibition is meticulously organized into three distinct phases of travel, each occupying its own dedicated space. The first segment, "The Beginning of the Journey: Freedom and First Steps," encourages children to take the lead through interactive installations. Featuring works by the artist Musquiqui Chihying and the creative duo Oritara Hara + Yu Hara, this zone empowers participants to chart their own courses, experiment with different directions, and embrace the responsibility that comes with making independent choices.

Moving forward, the second zone, "Novelty and Discoveries on the Way," offers a rich, multisensory environment. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rhythmic soundscapes created by the Uni Percussion studio. This section also facilitates a fascinating dialogue between the past and present by juxtaposing the historical landscapes of Taoyuan, as captured by the brush of Qiu Chuan-qian, with the contemporary photographic perspectives of Xiao Qi-heng, illustrating how time and space reshape our perception of familiar surroundings.

The final stage, "Encounters, Exchange and Connections," centers on the nuances of human interaction and social bonds. Through the installations of Crystallize Object (Wu Yu-Jung + Yen Yu-Tien) and Yin Zi-jie, the museum provides a platform for communication through movement, gestures, and the exchange of written notes. These activities are specifically designed to foster empathy and cultivate the essential skill of active listening among the younger generation.

The showcase features a sophisticated blend of newly commissioned pieces and significant works from the museum’s permanent collection. The diverse roster of participants includes both prominent Taiwanese and international artists, such as Musquiqui Chihying, Oritara Hara + Yu Hara, Uni Percussion, and the Crystallize Object team. Their contributions are complemented by the classic works of Qiu Chuan-qian, ensuring a narrative that bridges artistic generations.

Beyond the static displays, the exhibition is supported by an extensive public program. This includes specialized workshops led by artist Sun Hai-rong, multisensory experimental sessions, and photography projects that capture the world from a child’s unique vantage point. The museum has also organized theatrical excursions, inclusive tours for individuals with special needs, and activities tailored for toddlers. These initiatives are integrated into the broader Taoyuan museum group’s summer schedule, which also features the "How Books Travel into Society" exhibition at the Shishan Art Museum.

Director Lin Yong-neng emphasizes that for a child, the world is an infinite expanse where "travel" does not necessarily require long-distance transit. Instead, a new environment, a fresh perspective, or a curious question can serve as the gateway to profound discovery. Curator Chou Ting-i echoes this sentiment, noting that in this context, art functions not merely as an object for observation but as a vital conduit for dialogue and exploration.

In the landscape of 2026, this initiative aligns with a growing global movement where cultural institutions utilize the theme of travel to sharpen observation skills and creativity. By fostering empathy and adaptability, such programs help the next generation navigate a rapidly changing world. This exhibition represents a quiet yet consistent investment in the future, creating a sanctuary where curiosity is celebrated as a superpower and art serves as the primary compass for the great journey of life.
