A recent study published in the journal *Aging Cell* on June 3, 2025, offers new hope for individuals with Werner syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes premature aging. Researchers found that a Vitamin B3 supplement, nicotinamide riboside (NR), can reverse some effects of premature aging.
The Study
The study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Participants with Werner syndrome received either NR or a placebo for 26 weeks, followed by a switch in treatment for another 26 weeks. The research team tracked NAD+ blood levels, skin ulcer size, arterial stiffness, and kidney function.
After 26 weeks, patients taking NR showed higher levels of NAD+ in their blood, reduced arterial stiffness, and fewer body ulcers. The trial also observed improvements in kidney function. Importantly, the study did not report any serious side effects. This research could lead to effective treatments for premature aging and offer broader implications for combating aging in general.
