In a significant discovery during August 2025, archaeologists at Sicily's Villa Romana del Casale have unearthed a mosaic depicting Roman-era sandals, reminiscent of modern flip-flops. The find, located in the southern baths of the villa, also includes a mosaic inscription and three columns with capitals. Dating back to the 4th century AD, this mosaic, while perhaps less elaborate than other famous works at the UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases the skilled artistry of its time and was part of a larger decorative scheme.

The excavation was conducted as part of the fourth ArchLabs international Summer School, a training program led by Professor Isabella Baldini. This initiative brought together over 40 students and researchers from eleven countries, providing hands-on experience in archaeological methods. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Parco Archeologico di Morgantina and Villa Romana del Casale, the University of Bologna, and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). The Villa Romana del Casale, a testament to late Roman opulence, is renowned for its extensive and exceptionally well-preserved mosaics, offering invaluable insights into Roman culture and daily life. The discovery of the sandal mosaic further enriches the understanding of Roman footwear and artistic expression, with ongoing analysis expected to shed further light on the villa's inhabitants.
