Roman Anchor Recovered Off Italian Coast

Edited by: Dmitry Drozd

In June 2025, a Roman-era lead anchor stock was recovered from the seabed off Acciaroli, Italy, by the Carabinieri Subacquei of Naples. The recovery operation, which took place at a depth of 24 meters, involved the support of a crane and the participation of local authorities.

The anchor stock, weighing approximately 500 kilograms and measuring 172 centimeters in length, provides valuable insights into ancient maritime practices. It served as a counterweight to keep anchors stable on the seabed.

This discovery highlights the importance of underwater archaeology in the Cilento region, which is rich in submerged historical artifacts. The recovered artifacts will be studied and potentially displayed to promote cultural tourism.
