Ice Age Megafauna Fossils Unearthed During Texas Highway Construction

During an environmental review for the Loop 88 highway project in Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) made a significant discovery of Ice Age fossils dating back to the Pleistocene Epoch. The excavation revealed remains of megafauna, including a giant ground sloth identified by its tooth.

Chris Ringstaff, environmental review coordinator for TxDOT, highlighted the diversity of the finds. Paleontologists are working to identify other potential species like mammoths or mastodons. TxDOT is collaborating with the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory and the Museum of Texas Tech University for proper identification and preservation of the fossils.

Archaeologists are also searching for micro-artifacts to find evidence of human activity related to the megafauna. Such a discovery would provide insights into the relationship between early humans and these giant creatures. The Loop 88 project is ahead of schedule, and the archaeological dig is not expected to cause delays. This find contributes to our understanding of prehistoric life and human-animal interactions in the region during the Ice Age.
