Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is a vibrant metropolis with a rich history and culture. The city's name, now Chennai, reflects a journey through time, influenced by various rulers and colonial powers.
Originally, the region was part of ancient Tamilakam, experiencing the influence of the Pallavas from the 3rd to 9th centuries CE. Later, the British East India Company established a presence, building Fort St. George in 1639. The settlement was named 'Chennapatnam' after Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, a Telugu chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, who granted the land to the British.
Another theory suggests the name derives from 'Chennaiyar,' referring to the Kesava Perumal Temple. While the city was known as Madras for much of its history, it was officially renamed Chennai in July 1996 by the Government of Tamil Nadu to remove colonial influences and affirm Tamil culture. Chennai embodies a blend of ancient heritage and modern progress.
