Severe Thunderstorms Impact Western Australia, Prompting Safety Warnings

17:12, 27 July

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

On Sunday, July 27, 2025, Western Australia experienced severe thunderstorms, leading the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a warning at 6:26 am for parts of the Lower West and South West districts. The warning highlighted the potential for damaging winds and heavy rainfall, which could result in flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported that a trough of low pressure ahead of a cold front was generating showers and severe thunderstorms through the southwest of the state. Locations affected included Bunbury, Busselton, Mandurah, Margaret River, Perth, and Augusta. A wind gust of 98 km/h was recorded at Cape Naturaliste at 5:07 am, underscoring the intensity of the weather system. Additionally, 72 mm of rainfall was recorded at Wilyabrup in the six hours leading up to 5:30 am.

Residents were advised to seek shelter away from trees, power lines, stormwater drains, and streams. It was recommended to stay indoors, close curtains and blinds, and avoid using landline telephones during lightning. Drivers were cautioned to be alert for hazards on the road, such as fallen power lines and loose debris, and to avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services emphasized the importance of staying informed and taking necessary safety measures during such severe weather events.

For the most current information and updates, residents were encouraged to monitor official channels, including the Bureau of Meteorology's website and local media broadcasts.
