Severe Storms Impact Murcia Region with Hail and Flooding

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

A powerful summer storm struck the Murcia region on July 24, 2025, bringing torrential rain and hail that led to significant disruptions in several towns.

In Caravaca de la Cruz, the storm's intensity resulted in substantial flooding, prompting the evacuation of residents from affected areas. Emergency services responded promptly to assist those impacted by the severe weather conditions.

Calasparra also experienced heavy rainfall and hail, causing road closures and impeding travel. The local authorities activated emergency plans to manage the situation and ensure public safety.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) had issued an orange alert for intense rains and hailstorms in the Noroeste and Altiplano regions of Murcia. The alert was maintained until midnight, with forecasts predicting up to 30 liters of rain per square meter in one hour and hailstones exceeding 2 centimeters in diameter. Additionally, a coastal warning was activated due to winds reaching up to 50 km/h and waves up to three meters high.

In response to the adverse weather, the regional Civil Protection Plan for Flood Risk (Plan Inunmur) was activated at level one emergency. Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution in areas prone to flooding.

While the storm caused significant disruptions, emergency services and local authorities worked diligently to manage the situation and mitigate the impact on the community.
