Wimbledon 2025: Players Face Record Heat

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships began on June 30, 2025, under a record-breaking heatwave. Temperatures in London reached a provisional high of 29.7°C (85.5°F) at Kew Gardens, exceeding the previous record set in 2001.

The All England Club implemented its heat rule, allowing breaks when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) hits 30.1°C (86.2°F). This rule considers ambient temperature, humidity, wind, and sun angle. Breaks are scheduled after the second or third set, offering players a chance to cool down.

Organizers provided water refill stations, weather updates, and shaded areas to assist spectators. The tournament also features automated electronic line calling systems, a first for Wimbledon. Experts warn that such extreme temperatures may become more frequent due to climate change.
