While a deepening trough will bring rain and storms to our Western states and northern plains, elsewhere around the world, more strong storms struck parts of Spain on Tuesday, bringing furious winds and torrential downpours. #SpainWX
Spain Faces Extreme Weather Divide: Heatwave Grips South, Thunderstorms Batter Northeast
Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17
Spain is currently experiencing a significant meteorological dichotomy, with the southern region of Andalusia facing a severe heatwave while northeastern areas are being hit by intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
In Andalusia, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow alert for Huelva on September 12, 2025, predicting maximum temperatures to reach 36°C. Further escalation of heat is anticipated across the south, with Seville and Cordoba expected to record temperatures between 37-38°C by Sunday. Seville previously recorded an all-time September high of 44°C in 2025, an unusual figure for the month. The severity of heatwaves in Spain has been increasing, notably the 16-day heatwave in August 2025, which was the most intense on record.
Conversely, Catalonia is under an orange alert for Saturday, September 13, 2025, due to forecasts of severe thunderstorms and substantial rainfall. Areas including Barcelona and the Costa Brava could experience up to 60mm of rain in a short period, raising concerns about potential flooding. This pattern of localized, intense rainfall and thunderstorms has been observed elsewhere in Spain, such as the devastating floods in Valencia in late October 2024, which caused considerable damage and electrical activity.
These contrasting weather events highlight the diverse climatic conditions Spain faces. While the south endures extreme heat, the northeast is dealing with the disruptive impact of severe storms. Such events emphasize the critical need for preparedness and heightened awareness of the nation's evolving weather patterns. Studies suggest that climate change is intensifying both heatwaves and extreme rainfall events, making them more frequent and severe. For example, early analysis indicates that climate breakdown made wildfire conditions in Spain and Portugal 40 times more likely. These dual weather extremes serve as a stark reminder of nature's power and the necessity for adaptive strategies to manage the impacts of climate change on communities and infrastructure across Spain.
