Ruidoso, New Mexico, experienced a devastating flash flood on July 8, 2025, triggered by intense monsoon rains. The Rio Ruidoso River reached a record height of over 20 feet, exceeding the previous record set in July 2024 by nearly 5 feet.
The floodwaters caused significant damage, including the destruction of a house. Emergency responders conducted at least 85 swift-water rescues, assisting residents trapped in homes and vehicles.
Tragically, three fatalities were reported: an adult male and two children, aged 4 and 7. Preliminary assessments indicate that between 35 to 50 homes have been damaged or destroyed. The Ruidoso Downs racetrack was also impacted, leading to the cancellation of a major race.
The severity of the flooding was exacerbated by a previous wildfire, which led to soil erosion. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an emergency declaration. Search and rescue operations continue, and shelters have been established for displaced residents.
The community is now focused on recovery and rebuilding efforts. Local officials are urging residents to remain vigilant as the monsoon season continues, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of such extreme weather events.
