In 2025, the German state of Hessen significantly increased its investment in flood protection measures due to the growing challenges posed by climate change. The Hessian Environment Minister, Priska Hinz, emphasized the necessity of enhanced measures to mitigate flood risks.
Over the next four years, approximately 208 million euros will be invested in constructing flood retention basins and reinforcing dikes. An additional 30 million euros are earmarked for measures related to the restoration of floodplains. These investments aim to improve flood protection while simultaneously generating ecological benefits.
Despite these efforts, the German Environmental Aid (DUH) believes that more needs to be done in flood protection. The DUH calls for increased measures, particularly in nature-based flood protection, such as the restoration of floodplains and rivers. Hessen's actions in 2025 reflect a commitment to addressing climate change challenges.
