PIB Debunks Viral 55°C Heatwave Alert; Urges Public to Trust IMD Forecasts - May 2025

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has debunked a viral social media post warning of an extreme heatwave reaching 55 degrees Celsius. The PIB, the government's official information arm, has labeled the message circulating online as “completely fake.” The message falsely claimed to be an official government alert, advising people to remain indoors between 10 am and 3 pm from May 29 to June 2.

The PIB clarified that the central government has not issued any such directive or notification. They are advising the public to only refer to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for verified and updated weather information. The IMD’s monthly outlook for May does predict higher-than-normal temperatures across much of the country.

The IMD also anticipates a greater number of heatwave days, particularly in northwestern and central India. However, the IMD has not forecast any temperature spikes reaching 55 degrees Celsius. Government officials are urging citizens to avoid spreading or falling victim to misinformation, especially during periods of extreme weather. The PIB also reminds users to verify any alarming claims through their fact-checking initiative.
