Gujarat Grapples with Torrential Downpours, Prompting Widespread Evacuations and Rescue Operations

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Junagadh district in Gujarat experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall on August 19, 2025, with several talukas receiving over 129 mm of precipitation within a 12-hour period. This resulted in significant waterlogging and a flood-like situation, necessitating extensive rescue efforts.

Mendarda taluka recorded a staggering 331 mm of rainfall in 12 hours, while Keshod taluka received 280 mm. Devbhoomi Dwarka district also faced a deluge, with Kalyanpur taluka recording 279 mm and Dwarka taluka receiving 152 mm. The heavy rainfall caused rivers and dams to swell, inundating villages and threatening residents.

In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were mobilized. Rescue operations included the evacuation of 12 individuals trapped in low-lying areas of Manewada village in Junagadh. Additionally, 46 schoolchildren and four teachers were trapped in Borasar village, Porbandar district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall across several districts, including Junagadh and Porbandar, anticipating continued showers. The forecast indicated heavy to very heavy rainfall across numerous Gujarat districts until August 25, 2025. In response to the severe weather, authorities suspended bus services and closed educational institutions in the most affected regions to ensure public safety.

Studies, including research from IIT Gandhinagar, suggest that while such rainfall events are not unprecedented, urban development, altered elevations, and compromised drainage systems can exacerbate flooding. The recurring nature of these events highlights the importance of robust urban planning and resilient infrastructure for preparedness.
