Panama is currently experiencing the effects of Tropical Wave #24, which has brought unsettled weather conditions across a significant portion of the country. The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) has issued a watch alert, effective from August 21st through August 23rd, due to the combined influence of Tropical Waves #24 and #25.
The IMHPA has documented intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and notable wind gusts, particularly along the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines. This atmospheric disturbance is expected to produce localized microbursts, capable of generating sudden, powerful winds. Projected rainfall accumulations are anticipated to range from 20 to 100 millimeters, with higher volumes likely in elevated mountainous terrains and regions adjacent to the Caribbean.
The interaction of these tropical waves with other atmospheric elements in the region is forecast to bring significant rainfall, potentially reaching between 30 to 160 millimeters daily in areas of high intensity. Several provinces and regions are expected to experience the most pronounced effects, including Chiriquí, Veraguas, Coclé, Western Panama, Panama, Darién, the Emberá region, the Guna Yala region, Colón, Bocas del Toro, and the Ngäbe Buglé region.
In response to these developing conditions, authorities are strongly advising residents in areas susceptible to flooding to exercise extreme caution. Outdoor activities are discouraged during periods of adverse weather, and maritime operations are subject to heightened safety protocols due to the potential for hazardous sea states. The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has provided crucial guidance, urging the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers or streams, to steer clear of downed electrical cables, and to move away from structures or trees that may be unstable.
Taking shelter in secure locations away from windows and potential falling hazards is paramount. The current weather situation serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of the environment and the importance of collective preparedness.
