Earthquakes Hit Evia, Greece: Magnitude 4.5 Tremor Felt in Athens

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Aegean Sea near Evia Island, Greece, at 3:23 AM on May 19, 2025. The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported the event, with the epicenter at a depth of 16.9 km. The tremor was felt in the Athens region, but no immediate reports of damage were issued.

A subsequent quake with a magnitude of 3.6 was recorded 20 minutes later. Seismic activity has been observed in the region, with a 4.4 magnitude quake recorded last week. Efthymios Lekkas, President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), stated that this seismic activity is consistent with past patterns in the area and that there is no cause for significant concern at this time.

Local officials have reported cracks in approximately 20 buildings, including homes and shops. Schools have been closed as a precautionary measure, and building inspections are underway to assess any potential damage.
