A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Crete, Greece, on May 22, 2025, prompting a tsunami warning and causing concern across the region. The quake was felt as far as the Peloponnese peninsula, the Cyclades, and even Cyprus.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake's depth at approximately 69 kilometers, with the epicenter located 58 kilometers northeast of Elounda. Residents reported feeling the quake, which caused many to rush into the streets. A tsunami warning was issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), advising residents in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, and Portugal to follow guidance from their local authorities.

While some older buildings in Heraklion sustained damage, initial reports indicate no major injuries. Authorities are checking schools and public buildings as a precaution. The Imbros Gorge in Sfakia, a popular hiking trail, has been temporarily closed to ensure visitor safety. The Greek fire brigade remains on high alert across Crete.
