Tanzania's Sea Cucumber Farming Revolution: A Sustainable Blue Economy Success Story

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

In 2025, Tanzania's Blue Economy saw a significant boost with the rise of sustainable sea cucumber farming. This initiative, spearheaded by the government and various organizations, aims to balance environmental conservation with economic growth for coastal communities.

President Hussein Mwinyi inaugurated the Visiwani Sea Cucumber Farm Zanzibar project in January 2025, located in Ukunjwi, North Pemba Region. The project includes a processing factory designed to produce at least 100 tonnes of sea cucumbers annually. Visiwani Sea Cucumber Farming Limited focuses on eco-friendly cultivation methods and provides training to local farmers.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have also partnered with the Zanzibar government to develop hatcheries and training programs. This collaboration supports the cultivation of various marine species, including sea cucumbers. This approach provides economic opportunities, promotes environmental conservation, and preserves cultural significance for local communities.
