Charente-Maritime Coastal Erosion: 2025 Strategies and Challenges

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

Charente-Maritime's coastline faces significant erosion due to rising sea levels and severe weather. In 2025, the Royan Atlantique agglomeration actively implements strategies for coastal erosion management, allocating resources to surveillance, prevention, and consolidation efforts.

Île d'Oléron experiences rapid coastal retreat, leading local authorities to focus on re-sanding areas to maintain the dune cordon and manage sediment. A wastewater treatment plant is also threatened by erosion, with nearly 20 million euros allocated to resolve the issue.

The Regional Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine supports these actions with financial aid, emphasizing monitoring and preventing erosion, reducing vulnerabilities, and actively combating erosion through natural processes and infrastructure maintenance. Coastal erosion threatens 2,200 campsites along the French coast, and adaptation strategies are redefining seaside tourism in 2025.
