Odisha, India, is witnessing a significant increase in its Olive Ridley turtle population in 2025, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) is contributing to this success. Managing Director Karan Adani celebrated the positive trends on World Turtle Day, highlighting the growing numbers at Gahirmatha beach near Dhamra.
APSEZ has allocated approximately $3.6 million USD (₹30 crore) towards protecting these vulnerable sea turtles. Their initiatives include dark sky lighting to reduce sea glare, support for turtle migration through trawler assistance for forest department patrolling, and the establishment of safe navigation routes away from turtle congregation zones. Fishing zone demarcation using buoys restricts boats from entering sensitive areas, coupled with community engagement initiatives educating fishers about conservation.
During the 2024-25 season, approximately 689,000 Olive Ridley turtles nested at Gahirmatha beach. In February 2025, around 700,000 Olive Ridley turtles laid eggs at Rushikulya beach, marking a record. Karan Adani has reaffirmed APSEZ's commitment to continuous conservation, working with local communities and wildlife authorities to protect these marine creatures and their fragile ecosystems.
