Canada Launches S-100 Sea Trials to Revolutionize Marine Navigation

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) has initiated S-100 Sea Trials in the St. Lawrence River, marking a significant step towards modernizing marine navigation. This initiative, announced by the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, aims to validate new digital hydrographic standards.

The S-100 data model, developed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), introduces a layered, interactive approach to visualizing the marine environment. It integrates real-time data like depths, landmarks, and currents into a dynamic format, enhancing navigational safety and efficiency.

From June to November 2025, mariners and stakeholders can access S-100 digital navigation products free of charge to test their performance. This collaborative effort, involving CHS, the Canadian Coast Guard, and others, will advance global adoption of these standards, improving maritime safety and environmental protection.
