In São Paulo, a retired man has transformed a degraded area into a thriving urban forest. Hélio da Silva, a self-proclaimed "urban planter," dedicated over two decades to planting over 41,000 trees.
His efforts focused around the Tiquatira stream, creating a green oasis in the concrete metropolis. Starting in 2003, Silva's initiative prioritized native species, including Brazilwood, guava, mulberry, and cambucá.
The result extends beyond flora, significantly benefiting local fauna. Birdwatchers have cataloged 45 different species, including toucans and woodpeckers, in the area. In 2007, the area was transformed into São Paulo's first linear park.
