A new hybrid orchid, named *Paphiopedilum Memoria Jakob Oetama*, has achieved international acclaim following its official registration by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in England on February 18, 2025. This registration signifies global acknowledgment for this Indonesian-origin flower.

The development of this unique orchid began in 2019, undertaken by Indonesian orchid breeder Hadhiyyah Nur Cahyono. The hybrid is a cross between endemic Indonesian species from Papua and Sumatra, symbolizing national unity. This symbolism is deeply connected to the legacy of Jakob Oetama, a prominent figure in Indonesian journalism, whose work consistently promoted values of humanity and nationhood. In orchid nomenclature, names prefixed with "Memoria" are traditionally given to honor individuals who have made a significant impact.

The creation of *Paphiopedilum Memoria Jakob Oetama* is not only a horticultural achievement but also a tribute to Jakob Oetama's lifelong dedication to fostering national identity and humanistic principles through his journalism. Oetama, who began his career in 1955, co-founded the influential Kompas Gramedia Group, reflecting his vision and impact on Indonesian media. He lived 09/27/1931- 09/09/2020, at the age of 88.

The Bogor Botanical Gardens, established in 1817 and the oldest botanical garden in Southeast Asia, is home to an extensive collection of orchids. The gardens are committed to conservation and propagation efforts for rare and threatened species. The RHS registration highlights Indonesia's growing contribution to the global horticultural landscape and serves as a recognition of Jakob Oetama's enduring influence.

Hadhiyyah Nur Cahyono expressed her intention for the orchid to embody this spirit, stating, "I want this hybrid to not only be beautiful in form but also have meaning. The female parent from Papua and the male from Sumatra seem to unite the easternmost and westernmost parts of Indonesia in one flower, just like Pak Jakob's spirit of uniting the nation through his journalistic work." This new orchid hybrid represents a living embodiment of national pride and a tribute to a figure who significantly shaped Indonesian discourse.
