Mexican Students Develop Biodegradable Fishing Line to Combat Ghost Nets

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

In Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, students from the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos del Estado de Michoacán (Cecytem) are showcasing innovative ecological projects at Infomatrix Iberoamérica.

One notable project, ECORED, developed by Sarahí González Esquivel and Luis Diego Rentería Moreno, focuses on creating a biodegradable fishing line. This line is made from cellulose and filaments derived from water hyacinth.

The aim is to replace conventional fishing nets, preventing the creation of 'ghost nets' and reducing the annual loss of marine flora and fauna.
