Maspalomas Dunes Restoration Project Serves as Model for Global Ecosystem Recovery

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

In Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, a successful project is underway to restore the degraded ecosystem of the dunes. The project, known as Masdunas, has achieved significant results in recent years, serving as a model for other countries and islands.

The project has protected 14,000 cubic meters of sand through the planting of balancones, the installation of sand collectors, and other maintenance efforts. This has led to the recovery of up to 85% of the degraded dune front.

The project's success is attracting interest from countries like Cape Verde and other islands, seeking to replicate its methods. The project also involves coordinating with local authorities to relocate amenities away from the dunes to minimize human impact. This project is an example of adaptation to climate change.
