New Flora Guide Highlights Plant Diversity in Burkina Faso and Mali in 2025

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

A new flora guide comprehensively documents the plant diversity of Burkina Faso and Mali in West Africa. Published in French, this guide is the result of decades of botanical research and collaboration between institutions and botanists from Burkina Faso, Mali, France, Switzerland, and Germany.

The guide inventories 2,631 plant species, both native and introduced, providing detailed descriptions, distribution maps, and identification keys. It highlights species previously known from limited observations, including widespread and rare plants in unprotected, urbanizing areas.

The research updates information on over a hundred poorly understood species, some potentially new to science. This publication revitalizes scientific efforts and underscores the importance of botanical collaboration for preserving knowledge and species for future generations. The guide also bridges science and tradition by providing plant names in local languages.
