Global Efforts to Restore Biodiversity: Urban Forests and Protected Natural Reserves

16:37, 24 December

Edited by: Anna Klevak

In a significant move towards biodiversity restoration, students from Le Montat High School in Cahors, France, recently initiated the first phase of planting a future urban forest. Under the guidance of their teachers and local green space services, the students planted hedgerows and installed protective fencing to safeguard the area from foot traffic, ensuring the healthy growth of the new vegetation.

Scheduled for January, the second planting day will introduce 740 trees, including 270 oaks and 300 shrubs, across a 7,300 square meter site. This initiative, part of an educational project, aims to create a forest ecosystem while preserving existing biodiversity and enhancing local habitats.

Meanwhile, in Asturias, Spain, the Muniellos Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, continues to be a beacon of ecological preservation. Spanning over 5,000 hectares, this ancient oak forest is home to endangered species such as the brown bear and Iberian wolf. The area’s rich biodiversity attracts nature enthusiasts who can explore its trails, which are designed to minimize human impact.

Access to Muniellos is strictly regulated to protect its fragile ecosystem, allowing only 20 visitors daily. This ensures that the forest remains a sanctuary for its unique flora and fauna while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Both initiatives highlight the global commitment to restoring and preserving biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of local actions in addressing environmental challenges.
