The submarine Ran, developed with the University of Gothenburg, disappeared on January 9, 2024, during its first mission of the year. It was operating in a previously unexplored area of Antarctica. Prior to its disappearance, Ran had mapped over 130 square kilometers of underwater terrain. It revealed unexpected formations, including droplet shapes and erosion patterns. These findings challenge current models of Antarctic ice melt, according to Professor Anna Wåhlin. The Ran mapped a 16-kilometer cavern, revealing structures that defied anticipation. The data could transform the understanding of Antarctic ice behavior and its impact on sea-level rise.
