Scientists and military personnel are closely monitoring the activity of a volcano on Deception Island in Antarctica. Volcanologist Belén Rivas from the University of Cadiz reported that magma movement is causing deformation of the island. This deformation causes the volcano's vents to periodically open and close, posing a threat to the Spanish military base nearby. Volcanologist Ramón Ortiz from the Spanish National Research Council noted up to 80 earthquakes daily on the island. He believes this indicates a risk of a major eruption soon, which could lead to the island's submersion. While the volcano's vent has shrunk by four centimeters this year, scientists remain vigilant. In 2015, increased volcanic activity prompted a warning, leading to a necessary evacuation. Deception Island attracts tourists, with Antarctica receiving 125,000 visitors last year. Despite the fumaroles heating the water, the eruption threat remains real, and scientists continue to monitor the volcano closely to prevent a catastrophe.
