Radiosonde Launch at Vernadsky Station: Ukrainian Scientists Advance Antarctic Atmospheric Research

Ukrainian scientists at the Akademik Vernadsky Antarctic station are actively involved in meteorological research, including the launch of radiosondes to study the atmosphere. These devices, attached to gas-filled balloons, ascend to approximately 20 kilometers, measuring temperature, humidity, wind speed, and direction. The data gathered is transmitted in real-time, enabling the analysis of weather patterns and climate change impacts. This is especially valuable for studying extreme atmospheric phenomena like polar cyclones. The station's continuous operation since its transfer to Ukraine in 1996 ensures long-term data collection for climate studies. The Vernadsky station plays a crucial role in international research efforts, contributing to a better understanding of Antarctic climate and its global implications. The National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine coordinates these activities, ensuring the station remains a vital hub for polar research.
