Edited by: Olga Sukhina

In April 2025, BYD outpaced Tesla in European electric vehicle (EV) sales for the first time, signaling a notable shift in the region's automotive landscape. According to data from Jato Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), while Tesla sold 7,165 units.

This milestone highlights the increasing influence of Chinese automakers in Europe. BYD's BEV registrations experienced a 169% year-over-year increase in April, contrasting with Tesla's 49% decline. This surge propelled BYD into the top 10 BEV brands in Europe, securing the 10th position.

Further solidifying its European presence, BYD is establishing its European headquarters in Budapest, Hungary. Announced on May 15, 2025, the headquarters will focus on sales, after-sales services, vehicle certification and testing, and localized vehicle design. BYD's investment includes a new European R&D center in Budapest and collaboration with Hungarian universities, aiming to create thousands of jobs and foster innovation in electric vehicle technology.
