Original sketches by Roald Dahl, the beloved author of children's books, have sold for £23,940 at a recent auction. The sketches, created for his 1984 memoir 'Boy', were a rare find, offering a glimpse into Dahl's creative process.
The drawings, discovered in an envelope labeled "Dahl's drawings & odds and sods," belonged to Ian Craig, Dahl's art director. Craig, who passed away in 2023, was inspired by Dahl's sketches when creating the final illustrations for 'Boy'.
The sketches were purchased by an anonymous buyer, highlighting the enduring appeal of Dahl's work. The sale underscores the value of original manuscripts and artwork from iconic authors, even decades after their creation. Dominic Somerville-Brown, a specialist at Lyon & Turnbull, noted the rarity and popularity of the collection.
