Edited by: alya myart

Christie's London witnessed a historic moment on July 1, 2025, as Canaletto's 'Venice, the Return of the Bucintoro on Ascension Day' shattered auction records. The painting, dating back to circa 1732, sold for an impressive £31.9 million (€37.8 million), exceeding its pre-sale estimate.

The artwork, measuring 86 x 138 cm, is the largest Canaletto to appear on the market in two decades. An anonymous phone bidder, represented by Christie's director Alice de Roquemaurel, secured the masterpiece. The painting's provenance includes ownership by Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first prime minister.

This record-breaking sale underscores the enduring allure of Canaletto's work and the continued demand for Venetian art. The painting was first documented in 1736 as part of Walpole's collection at 10 Downing Street. This auction marks a significant milestone in the art market.
