Darth Vader's Lightsaber Sells for Record $3.6 Million; New Star Wars Film Announced

Darth Vader's iconic lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy has been sold at auction for a record-breaking $3.6 million. The screen-matched prop, featured in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," was the highlight of Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction in Los Angeles.

The final sale price, which includes a buyer's premium, significantly surpassed its pre-auction estimate of $1 million to $3 million. This sale positions the Sith Lord's weapon as the most valuable Star Wars item ever sold at auction, exceeding the previous record held by an X-Wing Fighter model that fetched $3.1 million.

The lightsaber, constructed from a modified camera flash handle, is distinguished by screen-matched damage, indicating its use in pivotal cinematic moments. It was held on screen by David Prowse, who portrayed Darth Vader, and his stunt double Bob Anderson. The prop's unique history and direct connection to the actors contributed to its high value.

In parallel with the auction's success, Lucasfilm has announced plans for a new Star Wars film, tentatively titled "Star Wars: Starfighter." Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, the film is slated to begin production in the fall of 2025. It will explore new narrative territories approximately five years after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker," introducing fresh characters and perspectives to the beloved universe.

The auction also featured other notable memorabilia, including Harrison Ford's bullwhip from "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade," Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man suit, and Patrick Stewart's Ressikan Flute from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," further highlighting the significant value placed on authentic pieces of film history.
