New Clock Measures Healthy Aging

Edited by: Liliya Shabalina

Researchers have developed a new biological age clock called the Intrinsic Capacity (IC) Clock. This clock measures functional capacity, focusing on mobility, cognition, mental health, vision, hearing, and nutrition.

The IC Clock uses DNA methylation patterns from blood or saliva samples to assess biological aging. It is a more accurate predictor of mortality compared to previous aging clocks.

The IC Clock is being adapted for use with dried blood spots to make it more accessible globally. It is expected to be used in the XPRIZE Healthspan competition to extend healthy lifespans. This research could revolutionize how we approach aging, focusing on maintaining function and improving quality of life.
