A new fitness trend, Japanese walking, is gaining traction for its potential health benefits and ease of implementation.
Developed by Professors Hiroshi Nose and Shizue Masuki at Shinshu University in Japan, this interval-based walking technique alternates between high-intensity and low-intensity paces.
The method involves three-minute intervals of brisk walking, followed by periods of slower walking, repeated for at least 30 minutes, four times a week.
This approach, similar to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), requires minimal equipment, only a stopwatch and space, making it accessible.
Research, including a key 2007 study, supports its effectiveness, demonstrating benefits such as weight loss and improved fitness.
While not everyone completes the program, the focus remains on consistent moderate to vigorous activity to promote longevity.
