Edited by: Liliya Shabalina

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report highlighting the global issue of loneliness and social isolation. The report emphasizes their significant impacts on global health and well-being.

Approximately one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness. This social disconnection is linked to over 871,000 premature deaths each year.

The report distinguishes between loneliness and social isolation, both linked to health issues. These include increased risks of heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, dementia, and premature death.

The WHO calls for coordinated action, investment in interventions, and valuing social connection. The report urges integrating social connection into national health policies and disease prevention.

The Commission's report, "From loneliness to social connection: charting a path to healthier societies," was launched on June 30, 2025. It proposes practical solutions to strengthen social connection.

The WHO is urging Member States and others to make social connection a global health priority. The report affirms that social connection is a necessity for a healthier world.
