Photos of Dogs May Reduce Workplace Aggression

Edited by: Liliya Shabalina

In a demanding work environment, managing stress and conflict is a constant challenge. Research shows that workplace conflicts negatively impact employees' mental and physical health, leading to absenteeism and reduced productivity.

A study by Carey J. Fitzgerald at the State University of New York explored whether a photo of a pet, specifically a dog, could offer similar emotional benefits as having the animal present. The study simulated an office environment with university students.

Participants exposed to a photo of their own dog showed significantly lower levels of anger and aggression. This effect was not observed with photos of cats or random dog/cat images. The researchers suggest that the human-dog bond stimulates the release of oxytocin and dopamine, which are related to stress management and emotional well-being.
