National Student Work Policy: Safeguarding Student Workers' Rights in India's Informal Economy

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

India's growing higher education sector and informal economy necessitate formalizing student employment. A National Student Work Policy is crucial to protect student workers' rights both on and off-campus. This policy outlines key rights and responsibilities for student workers (SWs), focusing on those employed outside of campus. The proposed policy emphasizes a workplace free from harassment and discrimination. It also ensures timely payment, reasonable work schedules, and confidentiality. Student workers also have the right to report concerns without retaliation and access grievance procedures. HEIs must establish Institutional Work Study Programs (IWSP) and Offices of Employment Services (OES). The OES will coordinate between students, institutions, and employers, managing job postings and providing legal representation. The policy also sets minimum age and working hour limits, with protections against discrimination and unjust termination. A grievance redressal committee will address student complaints, prioritizing payment disputes, ensuring fair treatment and wages in accordance with existing laws.
