Canary Islands Government Introduces AI to Streamline Business Administration Processes

On November 22, 2024, the Economy Department of the Canary Islands announced plans to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools aimed at simplifying administrative processes for businesses. This initiative is set to be developed by 2025, enhancing communication with entrepreneurs and freelancers through online consultations, thereby reducing bureaucracy.

The introduction of AI is part of a broader modernization effort within the regional administration. The technology will support the creation of a digital platform for businesses and freelancers, detailing necessary documentation and procedures that can be completed online, minimizing paperwork and the need for physical office visits.

This initiative is inspired by the 'Andalucía Simplifica' program launched by the Andalusian government, which includes over 500 measures aimed at improving administrative efficiency across all regional departments. The plan seeks to streamline citizens' interactions with the government, boost economic activity, and transform internal administrative operations.

The Economy Department's proposal, backed by an initial budget of €400,000, is less extensive than the Andalusian plan and primarily targets business owners, while also being accessible to citizens seeking to understand economic activity procedures.

Additionally, the Presidency and Public Administration Department has introduced a separate administrative simplification plan targeting citizens, which encompasses all government departments. This plan aims to expedite procedures and eliminate unnecessary processes, focusing on employment, social services, justice, education, and economic development.

While specific details of the Economy Department's plan remain undisclosed, the Gran Canaria Chamber of Commerce expressed support, viewing it as a significant step towards modernizing bureaucratic processes and addressing the pressing need for reduced administrative burdens on local businesses.

The Chamber highlighted that administrative procedures have been a major barrier for companies, and simplifying these processes will enable businesses to operate in a more agile and efficient environment.
